(via imgTumble)Nowhere in the Bible does it describe the brutal beating that Jesus endured before the cross. The most that it says is that He was scourged. According to history however, a scourging was nicknamed ‘half death’ They would use whips with several single or braided leather pieces of different lengths with small iron balls or sharp pieces of sheep bones tied through out. When a person was scourged they were tied to a post and had all their clothes taken from them. The entire backside of them were whipped by a soldier on either side. As the whips hit the back the iron balls would make contusions and then the leather or sheep bones would begin to cut into the skin and as it continued the cuts would tear up unto skeletal muscles. Sometimes because of bad aim the whips would catch onto the face and rip eyes out or wrap around the rib cage and open up the flesh and make organs visible. The soldiers that did this were trained in torture and they often got more confessions out of people through the scourging. This likely created pride within the soldiers. However during the flogging of Jesus, He kept quiet. Isaiah 53 makes mention of this three times. Imagine how mad this would make the soldiers as Jesus remained silent.
After this brutal beating the soldiers began to mock Him for saying that He is the king of the Jews. They put a purple robe upon Him and made a crown out of thorns which were likely 4-5 inches long. They then gave Him a reed for a cepter and began to beat Him in the head with this crown of thorns on. Look at the way they treat their Creator. Our sin and our unbelief is just as big of a mockery to Him.
Oh Father, you endured all of that for me..
